Spioenkop

Nestled in the heart of the Elgin Valley, Spioenkop Wines was established in 2008 with Koen Roose as winemaker. With several awards and accolades under their belt, Spioenkop produces wines that have finesse, balance, and purity, with the idiosyncratic character of the winemaker flowing through every bottle.

Koen Roose

Belgian Koen Roose is an ex-engineer and sommelier and started his own wine import company. It is during this career that his love for South African wine became real. Koen learned the job of viticulturist and winemaker in Burgundy and at L’Avenir of François Naudé. And made thejump towards making his own wines in 2005 when he bought Spioenkop, with first planting in 2008. He wanted to bring European finesse and freshness to South African wines and found in Elgin the perfect terroir to do so. “A great wine begins in your head” – Koen knew exactly what type of wine he wanted to make and he wanted to do it with grapes that he deemed perfect for Spioenkop:Riesling, Chenin and Pinotage. The rest is history!
